Project Management Certificate
Winter 2010
There is a strong demand for project management training in many sectors of the regional economy. Construction supervisors, engineers, administrators, non-profit and government agencies all require expertise in project management. The purpose of this certificate is to provide participants with advanced knowledge and skills in the principles of project management and to improve our regional organizational capacity to implement successful projects. Students successfully completing the program will be well prepared to write the Project Management InstitutesÕ Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Exam.
OSSD or Mature Student Status
The program is composed of 9 courses. Each course will be 18 hours in length. Total program length is 162 hours and is offered as a part-time certificate. The scheduling of the courses will be such that a student could complete the certificate within 2 years.

The following course will be delivered via the Contact North network in January 2010. The remaining courses will be offered at a later date, as determined by the college.
Principles of Project Management Cost: $284.00
Students will be provided with a broad overview of all the components of project management. They will be able to identify the main components of a project and utilize some basic tools and approaches.
Project Initiation & Business Requirements
Students will learn how to develop a project plan that is feasible and validated by those involved in the project including leadership and project support personnel. The course will also develop skills for creating a detailed work plan that incorporates all necessary resources, schedules and budgets.
Project
Scope Management
Students will learn
the importance of defining a project scope and how projects that become out of
scope lead to cost overruns or unanticipated results. This course will provide
students with the processes required to ensure that the project includes all
the work that is required but only the work that is required to run projects
effectively. Change Management will also be covered, including why, when, and
how to introduce changes to project scope.
Time
Management & Project Scheduling
Students will learn
how to effectively manage time and resources and schedule a project based on
available resources. Processes will be learned that contribute to the ability
to define, sequence, estimate duration and schedule activities identified in
the project.
Project Leadership
Students will learn
the different competencies required to go beyond working as a team member to
learning how to become an effective project leader. The development of skills
such as conflict resolution, problem solving, negotiations, building and
sustaining effective relationships are some of the required competencies of
this course. The role and relationship of the Project Manager amongst the
various Stakeholders will be understood.
Human
Resources & Project Communications
Exploring the
Òproject life cycleÓ specific human resource and communication requirements,
this course emphasizes how to build the skills and knowledge needed to plan an
effective project group, recruit quality people to staff it and build them into
an effective team. Focus will also include communicating to the right
audience, the right way, at the right time.
Project Quality Management
Students will learn how to determine the desired outcomes or characteristics in
terms of quality and then learn how to plan for their implementation, measure,
monitor and adapt to ensure project success.
Cost and Procurement Management
Students will learn
the basics of project cost management methods including: earned value analysis
fundamentals, cost management system fundamentals, basic budgeting and
responsibility accounting, and cost management reports. In addition, the course
will review the procurement cycle including RFPs, contracts, and legal
requirements.
Project
Risk Management
Students will be able to conduct an effective risk identification analysis,
identify the different types of risks and opportunities, as well as apply
appropriate risk management tools and develop risk mitigation plans.
